One of the things that makes Key West great is that it has lots of fun places that are off the beaten path. Unfortunately many people spend most of their time on Duval Street and don't see many of these things. This is our attempt at letting you in on some of the places that many people don't get to. Make sure to let us know of your favorite "hidden places". We will post them and give you the credit you so deserve.

Fort Zachory Taylor State Park
By far the best beach in Key West. In addition there is a historic fort that is really worth seeing. The fort has tours daily at noon and 2:00. Reservations are not required. The tour is a good thing to do on a hot day, much of the tour is inside the fort which stays cool.

The Beach has a great picnic area and grilles. If you are looking for a change of pace we recommend going to the store and having a cook out on the beach. If you like snorkelling there is decent snorkelling from the beach. The far left hand side of the beach is the best place to snorkel.

Tower Bar

Located above Turtle Kraals is the Tower Bar. Frequently mostly by locals this is one of our favorite places to get a drink on the Island. It is a good place to go for Happy Hour at sunset. It overlooks Schooner Wharf. If you have the time check out the fish in the water near Schooner Wharf - it is chock full of large Tarpon. On a good day you can also see Manatees and even the occassional nurse shark.

McCoy Indigenous Park
One of the best things about Key West is all the hidden places you can find just by walking down the street. You could walk by McCoy Park 100 times and not even give it a second thought. But upon entrance we think you will be pleaantly surprised.

The park is deceptively large and contains over 100 types of plants and tress indigenous to the Florida Keys. Most of the trees in Key West are not native they were brought in. There is also a bird hostpital where you can see the birds up close as well as see wild birds. McCoy Park also has a self guided walking tour that we think you will enjoy.

Key West Cemetary

Some people may think it is a bit morbid to take a stroll through the cemetary but the Key West Cemetary is worth the trip. It is full of palm trees and roosters and even the graves express Key West's unique identity. There is usually nobody there and it is a really nice place to take a stroll. Our all time favorite is the grave that says "I told you I was sick!"

The most random engraving is "Devoted fan of Julio Iglesias."

Southernmost Key West
Southermost Point
If you are going to come this far south you might as well go to the Southernmost Point in the continental United States. It is a good photo opportunity to get your picture taken in front of the monument. By the way, beware of charlatans who hover around the monument. They offer to take your picture then coerce you into tipping them. Recently Key West has cracked down on this behavior so hopefully you won't be hassled.

Now we realize that this may not be all that hidden, but it astounds us at how many people come all this way and don't come to the Southernmost Point.

Southermost Runners Road Races
Looking to do something quasi active in Key West? Check out the Southernmost Runners Road Race Series. Each year the Southernmost Runners put on more than 15 races a year. Just like Key West the races are all about fun. Sure the races draw top notch talent but the post races parties are what make the races so fun. We never miss a race even if we don't run.
