-The
Breakfast Club Chronicles
Capt. Pat was trying to explain the relationship between high
stakes poker and the Oriental philosophy of Ying and Yang
over the noise ofthejuke box and Red The Wrench's profane
reaction to a reluctant bolt on the engine onboard the Coquille
tied up at the end of the dock.
-Some of the regulars at the bar tried to follow this rather
tenuous connection for a few min~tes
then gave up in favor of Red's efforts on the headbolt. The
Breakfast Club was in session as it is 7 days a week,
mostly at the Schooner Wharf Bar.
-Situated
on what was once a fish house on the water at the old Singleton
Docks, the Schooner
Wharf Bar is a thrown together establishment of begged, borrowed
and stolen items from allover
the world. Ship parts, scrap wood, bar tops salvaged from
anywhere and everywhere make this
the most unique and comfortable drinking spot on the island.
-For
example, the bartop on one side
is an old metal diving board salvaged from the navy base pool;
another side of the bar top is a
section of ships decking, still another is an old bar top
from a now defunct bar in New England.
|
The newest addition has a bar top made from lOO year old Italian
marble that once were the teller
counters at the old First National Bank of Key West. Each
of the six pieces weighs over 400 lbs.
The bar is an open air affair that found its design in plans
drawn up on the back of a drink coaster. The coasters are
known as "Schooner Wharf Contract" and are used
for almost
everything except their intended purpose.
-A
juke box occupies one end of the outside area, and
during Breakfast Club hours plays "Get a Haircut and
Get a real Job" at least three times a
morning. When Angie is bartending, the juke blasts out Joe
Cocker and Van Morrison at a level somewhere near the threshold
of pain. More mellow tunes and conversational volume
characterize the bar when Pittsburgh Bob is tending to the
Breakfast Club., although he does tend to favor Jimmy Buffet
shit.
